Marco is the son of the renowned film director, Gillo Pontecorvo. Having been raised in the industry, he launched his own career in 1997 as Director of Photography for the TV series, In Sailing in the Wrong Direction. He gained fame for his work on Rome, The Last Legion, Letters to Juliet, and Game of Thrones

In 2008 he stepped up to the role of Director with the movie PA-RA-DA, which was nominated for numerous awards and won The Silver Ribbon for Best Debut Director, and The David di Donatello Award for Best New Director. The widely acclaimed movie also won the Pasinetti Award at the 65th International Art Exhibition Venice Film Festival, as well as the Francesco Laudadio Prize for Best First Film at the Bari International Film Festival.
